I'm always happy to meet people on the trail or in bothies, but I do like an undisturbed night's sleep!

Of course, that wasn't an issue on the PCT, because except for the Muir Hut, there are no shelters on the trail (I suppose there are a few 'cabins' just off the trail, but we didn't investigate them).

Anyway, I think that the number of people on the trail is a subject that deserves a blog post of its own, so I'll defer answering for now.Gaylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08648378503343413924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694505809435969577.post-2099695972023577132012-07-19T14:24:36.117+01:002012-07-19T14:24:36.117+01:00Colin - I thought about you often during our walk ...Colin - I thought about you often during our walk - with the thought of 'I wish I had Colin's baseweight'! I'm sure that you'll be skipping through the desert and over those passes next year.

Jury's out as to whether we will go out to walk more of the trail. I didn't come away with a burning desire to finish it, particularly as there are other places in the world I'd like to go and see. But, equally, I wouldn't be adverse to going and doing another section further north.

One thing is for certain, if we do go to do more of it, then I want a lighter pack!Gaylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08648378503343413924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694505809435969577.post-39265543184618943852012-07-19T14:16:13.606+01:002012-07-19T14:16:13.606+01:00Dawn - Good tip on the cut off toothbrush head! As it goes, in the desert, even where we did have water to spare for a good handwash, there was no way we could stop the nails being absolutely filthy again within about three minutes. I've never seen dust and filth like it!

Jules - I've seen you comment both here and elsewhere a number of times, but somehow managed to overlook (until now) that you have a blog too! I'll be popping over for a read :-)

Andrew - Bet you wouldn't do it again with a 40lb pack though!Gaylehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08648378503343413924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694505809435969577.post-72320953537450486722012-07-19T07:29:54.828+01:002012-07-19T07:29:54.828+01:00Great post Gayle. Most people from the UK expect hiking in the US to be easy and as you found while the trails CAN be of better quality than we are used to external factors more than make up for that. I've not hiked the PCT yet (next year!) but I have hiked the Arizona Trail (desert) and Colorado Trail (high mountains) so think I can relate to the section you chose. Will you hike the rest of the trail now? Perhaps see you there next year!Colin Ibbotsonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694505809435969577.post-28657296404243855422012-07-19T01:54:05.575+01:002012-07-19T01:54:05.575+01:00Yep.
Interesting.
We encountered similar things ...Yep.
Interesting.
We encountered similar things many years ago on the GR10, during some very hot weather.
And that was with big old canvas rucksacks as well.
I reckon we had 40lb packs.
But it was great, and I would do it again.
It's just finding the time.Andrew Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14744521212967848460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694505809435969577.post-65413474803839527142012-07-18T18:38:06.325+01:002012-07-18T18:38:06.325+01:00Interesting notes!

And these issues can be strong determinants about how you tackle such a route.

One trail with a hard reputation is the GR20 and, whilst undoubtedly a tough walk, a lot of the difficulty originated due to the lack of water and food - much/all of which had to be carried, greatly adding to the difficulty.

Wise words for anyone preparing to trek in hot conditions. ThanksJuleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16576395337502021082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694505809435969577.post-9233974372386805682012-07-18T12:53:31.585+01:002012-07-18T12:53:31.585+01:00Thanks for that reply - it gives a good all round...Thanks for that reply - it gives a good all round insight into the walk. I also asked you about frequency of meeting others, and whether you thought the trail was overpopulated or not.

This thing about meeting others is strange. As I have approached a bothy I found myself hoping I would have it to myself, then you think it may be good to have a bit of company. I suppose one fears having to put up with some crass person, or a huge crowd.Sir Hughhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17908756392825206914noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4694505809435969577.post-89727108446266572342012-07-18T11:50:07.410+01:002012-07-18T11:50:07.410+01:00Hi Gayle, those pack weights are darned heavy. For me the solution was a chopped down toothbrush in my wash kit.Dawnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09839157927650251268noreply@blogger.com
