4 May
Start point: pull-in at NH 92889 25840. Probably enough room for a car not to block the gate. Bertie-the-Motorhome was partly blocking it, but it seemed unlikely that anyone would want access on a Sunday, and Mick could have moved at the drop off a hat.
Distance and ascent: 13.5km, 480m
Weather: sunshine and showers.
We were out at a do on Saturday night, not getting to bed until 2am. We were up at 8, and by half past were sitting in a supermarket car park having breakfast. It was over breakfast that I looked to see if there was any hill I could reasonably include in the drive back to Newtonmore. I came up with two contenders, but neither was ideal. Without committing myself, I said we'd drive via Carn Glas-choire and I'd look at the hill.
Sitting in a roadside pull-in at 1130, with the tops shrouded in cloud and rain coming down, it was tempting to opt for an afternoon of snooker watching instead. I delayed the decision by making an early lunch.
Finally I pulled on my running gear and threw a few items in a bag. Then I reconsidered, changed out of my running gear and into full Paramo, and finally I was ready to go.
Whilst a bike would have made it speedier, it was a very easy hill, with a track practically the whole way to the summit.
It snowed on me up there, but only very lightly.
When the showers came through, it was a cold day and I was glad for my warm and waterproof garb and buffalo mitts. When the sun came out, I roasted. Most inconvenient weather really, but better than continuous rain.
My return was a simple retracing of steps, but thanks to gravity was much faster than the outwards leg.
I'd told Mick to expect me back in 2.5hrs, but I'd shuffled along at a reasonable pace, bettering that estimate by 15 mins.
It had been another pleasing hill. Really easy thanks to the track, but with good scenery/views, when they weren't being obscured by showers.
12 hours earlier (shhh, don't tell anyone, but I was wearing running shorts under that frock😂)Summit selfie. That shower behind the Trig had already hit me.
