The Road goes ever on and on; Down from the door where it began;
Now far ahead the Road has gone; And I must follow, if I can;
Pursuing it with eager feet; Until it joins some larger way;
Where many paths and errands met; And whither then? I cannot say.

Home time

The time has come to say farewell to the States and journey home.

It's four days since we finished the walk and food has been a major feature of those days (and ice-cream, which I'm not sure qualifies as 'food'). I'm sure that I've put back on every single one of the pounds that I lost whilst we were walking, so I'll have to remember not to eat like we're walking 20 miles per day once we get home. Mick still has a way to go, in the weight-gain stakes, to get back to his normal size.

News on the face is that I'm sporting two bruises which are enough to make people look twice but not enough to make people stare (except for the woman on the 'tube' who could take her eyes off me - probably thought my husband had beaten me up!). They don't hurt now, except when I accidentally hit myself around the face. I seem to have done that a lot over the last few days, so can only assume that it's a regular feature of life that I don't notice in the absence of bruises!

Things on the agenda once we get home are to download the photos (I took just under 800 (on one battery!) Mick just over 300), sort through and share the pick of them, and to give some thoughts on the walk and on the top-favourite bits of gear.

But for now we need to find our way to the airport and see about leaving this sunny place. I'm sure that not long after arriving back in the UK we will experience our first rain in 7 weeks (maybe we'll even use the waterproofs we've carried, redundantly, for 500 miles).

  2. Well done, and welcome back to the land of rain and rain.

    After all that heat and dust why not look at a trip to Scott Base, or the North Pole, or a traverse of South Georgia - just a few ideas.
