The Road goes ever on and on; Down from the door where it began;
Now far ahead the Road has gone; And I must follow, if I can;
Pursuing it with eager feet; Until it joins some larger way;
Where many paths and errands met; And whither then? I cannot say.

Weather?

Any chance that someone reading this could look at MWIS and leave a comment letting us know whether the forecast for tomorrow (Wednesday) is still for persistent rain, hill fog and buffeting winds on the western hills?

I *really* want to do tomorrow's high route, but the last forecast we saw suggested that it wasn't going to be sensible in the conditions. And, if we can't do tomorrow's route then we also need to change today's route, because there's no point in ending today at the foot of a hill that we can't climb...

  1. Forecast for 5 May
    Wind - Northwest 20-30mph gusts to 40mph. Some buffeting on higher slopes.
    Rain - Spells of rain, heaviest and most persistent on western hills and across Lochaber will turn more patchy at times east of Rannoch Moor and in the Lomond NP.
    Cloud - Fairly extensive - Hills mainly shrouded in cloud with bases 300-700m lowest in the west and across Lochaber. Some breaks to near higher summits east of Rannoch Moor and in the Lomond NP.
    10% chance of cloud free Munros.
    Sunshine - Mainly poor visibility in hill fog. Some good visibility east of Rannoch Moor and in the Lomond NP at times.
    4 – 6C at 900 metres.
    Outlook - Mild air will affect most areas with spells of rain and extensive clouds during Wednesday, however cooler and drier air looks set to spread southwards across the Highlands during Thursday, with freezing levels falling to near or below the tops. This trend looks set to extend into the weekend with a northeasterly flow across many area and freezing levels remaining relatively low.

  2. you beat me to it....BBC weather map indicated pockets of rain and lots of cloud too, but MWIS is usually better. MWIS usually underestimates wind in my experience too.

  3. I was sending my daily forecast to Markus the Austrian, now at Kylesku, when I noticed the request, Chris.
    I also exchanged text messages with Gayle. They are resigned to the WHW for the next couple of days, but I've suggested they might do something in the Mamores, or at least go up Beinn na Caillich to escape the trail of ants...
    In my experience MWIS forecasts aren't much better than the BBC, and I perceive them to usually overestimate the effect of wind on the tops.
    Perhaps they actually get it pretty accurate.
