The Road goes ever on and on; Down from the door where it began;
Now far ahead the Road has gone; And I must follow, if I can;
Pursuing it with eager feet; Until it joins some larger way;
Where many paths and errands met; And whither then? I cannot say.

East to West Photos: Day 9

28 March (0900-1530)
Distance: 14.5 miles (Tot: 161.5) (Boston to Tattershall)
Weather: high cloud, sunny intervals, warm

It was another misty start to the day, but it was burning off nicely by the time this first photo was taken. When, at this point in the morning, I finally turned around and looked at where we had come from, I wished I had turned earlier. The tower of the church was once again striking, being so huge and so nicely placed in line with the waterway.

 Day 7-1 The waterway is the River Witham, but being contained between man-made banks, running in straight lines and having no appreciable flow, it has the appearance of a large canal more than a river. Indeed, it even featured narrow boats, as well as cabin cruisers. This craft looked like it had seen better days…

Day 7-2 With the mirror-calm surface and the mainly-blue skies, it all looked very pretty.

Day 7-3 We headed away from the river and into Tattershall, where I was torn as to whether it was worth a whistle-stop tour of the castle (doesn’t it look fantastic?), or whether my time was going to be better spent laundering our clothes. Alas, the mundane chores won the toss and so we headed straight to the campsite, but we really must return to visit the castle.

Day 7-4

Actually, we didn’t quite go directly to the campsite, as we paused for an ice-cream on the way, but I was so busy eating the ice-cream that I didn’t take the trouble to photograph either the kitten who wanted to be my best friend, nor the iguana sitting on the shoulder of the girl on the bench opposite.

  1. How many times have I been cross because I omitted to photograph something interesting? On several occasions I have ended up with fuzzy telephoto shots of subjects when I have remembered but walked too far to retrace my steps.

  2. Hi Gayle, I'm enjoying reliving your trip in glorious technicolor - hope you are as well.
    Already planning for next year - Lake Garda to Lake Constance has been mentioned...

  3. Conrad - also annoying is to review your photos when you get home and not be able to remember for the life of you why you took a particular photo which seems to be completely uninteresting, but you're sure that you took for a reason. That's happened a few times in this set of photos. I did eventually spot four chinooks (dots in the sky) in one such photo, but others are still a mystery.

  4. Martin - I am indeed enjoying reliving the journey, even if sorting out the posts is proving to be a lot more time-consuming than I expected.

    Lake Garda to Lake Constance sounds like an interesting one. Particularly if you follow the timescales suggested by the directions on Google Maps. When looking at the walking directions it reckons that it will take three days and five hours to cover the stated 424km between the two! I'm thinking that Google's formula for walking times is a little simplistic and optimistic.

  5. That's a bit quick even for me, Gayle. Maybe change days to weeks and hours to days and add in a few rest days - then you get a more realistic time scale.
    But you've actually got further than me in relation to the planning of this trip, which is just an idea arising from my acquisition of 'Trekking in the Alps' and some emails with Gillian Price!
    Looked out for you as we passed Cannock Chase today, but it must have been one of your days off!

  6. It's been a ridiculously long time since I was last on Cannock Chase; I must rectify that. Today I was sitting in an office in Derby. Cannock Chase would have been far more pleasing.
